Virginia Tech was founded in 1872 as a land-grant college in Blacksburg, Virginia. The school was originally known as Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College, and later as Virginia Polytechnic Institute. In 1944, the name was changed to its current form.
The school’s first president, Joseph D. Eggleston, oversaw the construction of most of the original buildings on campus. These include Main Building (now Norris Hall), barracks for students and faculty (now Dulles Hall), and a dining hall (now Lane Hall).
