It was founded on February 10, 1923, with the support of then-Governor Pat Neff and State Senator William B. Ward. The school initially consisted of four buildings on 33 acres (130,000 m²) of land donated by the citizens of Lubbock. The first students enrolled that fall and classes officially began on October 1, 1925
