Georgia Institute of Technology was founded in 1885 as the Georgia School of Technology, an industrial and engineering school for the burgeoning cotton industries of Atlanta and the Southeast. Its founder, John Saylor Dickey, envisioned Georgia Tech as a “trade school for the young men of Georgia.”

The School’s first class included just 85 students, but by 1904 enrollment had grown to nearly 600. In 1909, the School was renamed the Georgia Institute of Technology to reflect its evolving mission.
