education and training
To become an ultrasound technician, you will need to complete a one- to four-year educational program in diagnostic medical sonography. Most programs offer an associate degree, but some offer a certificate or bachelor’s degree. These programs include classroom, laboratory and clinical instruction in such topics as patient care, medical ethics, anatomy and physiology. You will also learn to use diagnostic imaging equipment.
The job outlook for ultrasound technicians is excellent. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that employment in this field is expected to grow by 17% from 2019 to 2029, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. This growth is due to the aging baby-boomer population, who will require more diagnostic imaging procedures as they age. The BLS also notes that there will be an increasing demand for point-of-care ultrasound services in doctor’s offices, clinics, and emergency departments.
