The History of Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech was founded in 1872 as an agricultural and mechanical college and was one of the first land-grant colleges in the United States. The school underwent a number of name changes and expansions over the years, becoming Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI) in 1944 and adding a grad school in 1962. In 1970, it merged with nearby Radford College, becoming Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, or Virginia Tech for short.
Today, Virginia Tech is a comprehensive university with nine colleges spanning 240 programs of study. The school enrolls over 31,000 undergraduate and 7,000 graduate students from all 50 states and nearly 100 countries. It’s known for its strong engineering and science programs, as well as its business school, which is ranked among the best in the nation.
